After the floods of 1972 when the tramways had lost thirty trams to
water and lightening strikes, they pulled all stored trams that were
servicible out of storage gave them a service and placed them in
service as well as tranfereing cars from there home depots to
forigien depots to overcome the accute shortage of sevicable trams. At
this time W7's were running in Flinder st,L class tram was attached
to either Essendon or South Melbourne depot and as the picture posted
of Y 469 shows it was transfered to Kew.As the stored cars rentered
service a number of them failed due to being out off service for a
long period this resulted in the order from head office when things
returned to normal servicable tram level that there would be no
stored trams, all would be run at frequent intervals.Kew depot I
beleive operated on a system of using all trams on a rotating road
basis, where every tram on one road would be used while road eight
would not unless required and this would change daily.thus rotateing
and using every tram on a regular basis, leaving nothing stored.
