Hi Bill, You commented:

If you look at how those system s are used, with the (only partial)
exception of the SF, most of the others exist specifically to handle
tourist style traffic between tourist style destinations. They may
serve a "real tranport purposes" in moving tourists but they are
mostly, at best, small side shows in public movement of residents in
the cities concerned.
Don't forget the St Charles line in New Orleans, has never had a modern car
(except the sneak attack by the ex SEPTA PCC) and, as stated before, the F
line and Milano. In all the above cases these cars do exactly what they were
designed to do, in the case of N.O. they have 35 cars to cover a route of
similar length as Glenelg (damn, there is another that shoots you in the
foot, tram patronage on those cars built in 1929 is up 3.3% to 1.58Mil
2000-01 according to "All About Public Transport in Adelaide") that uses 14
cars! I might ad that, all the above lines (with the exception of those
"modern" 1947 PCC's on the F) are noisy traditional cars whilst the
Melbourne W's with double helical gears are almost as quite as any modern
car and even less body rattles than the new Citadis!

So no parallel between PCC introduction and the introduction
of modern cars here in Melbourne.

The M&MTB annual reports and press reports at the time indicated very
high levels of acceptance and prefenece for the new Z trams over the
existing cars.
Read what you like into those reports, I can tell you (and WGB will back
this up) that, I was one of the first to drive the Z's in 1975 when I did a
"cancelled day off" on a Sunday with 3 other instructors at the workshops,
the learn how to drive them and teach others, I have to tell you that,
especially in Summer, those cars were absolutely hated and, if someone had
suggested buses, they would have jumped at them, they were hard to get in
and out of, I remember standing every time we were at Bourke and Swanston
and yelling for pax to move past the centre doors, they were hot in summer
and they drove people away. In the first couple of months they were popular
because no one had seen their like before but, as soon as the hot weather
turned up well.....
