Icons (was: Re: TRAMWAY MUSEUM GAINS SUPPORT)

Hi, gang!

Icons are funny things. Transportation icons are valuable to a city's
identification, as they symbolize the pulse, essence and vibrancy of a city
because they represent motion. So does architecture, but for a different
reason--grandeur, prosperity and pride in city culture.

Transportation icons in cities that I know about:

San Francisco: Cable cars. Now even the F line cars and BART have
become icons.
New Orleans: Both St. Charles and Riverfront streetcars.
New York: The New York Subway.
London: Double-Decker buses.
Melbourne: The W trams.
Portland: MAX Light Rail.
San Diego: San Diego Trolley.
Milan: Peter Witt trams.
Lyon: Citadis trams (since the beginning of the year).
Paris: Métro.

I'm sure there are more, but this is off the top of my head...
