I visit Melbourne periodically on business and I have a reasonably
good idea of what the Melbourne press is covering at any point in
time. I have myself seen and heard media reports over recent times
which have included statements from the operating companies about
their general reluctance to return the Ws to service and that they
will do so because they have "no choice" under their service
agreements with the government... meanwhile even more time passes with
no Ws in normal revenue service.

If the government had have said that they were getting rid of them
altogether due to safety concerns, then I expect that you would have had
significant public debate about why, just like last time.

The government doesn't seem to want to press the issue with the
operating companies, and the operating companies are clearly delaying
the process as long as they possibly can. I expect that by now there
will be no significant public debate if they just fade away apart from
the City Circle and Moomba parades.
