But we have settled for apparently insurmountable technical problems with
the brake systems of cars which have operated successfully for 50 years plus
as an excuse to keep them off the road.

That's bullshit. The tram companies and perhaps the trammies union didn't
want them to run.

Personally I think the Ws should be out running on a line regularly, a
line
suited to their operating characteristics and one with high exposure to
tourists and pedestrians in the City.

Perhaps a regular W class service should run between the University and
St
Kilda via Swanston Street, St Kilda Road, Fitzroy Street and Acland
Street.
That could cater for shorthaul passengers within the CBD and St Kilda and
also carry tourists and locals out to an area full of restaurants and
cafes
and near the beach.

You mean something like the original proposal to run them on the 8,12 and
16? 8^)
(With modern cars on the other routes)
