MAAS Trams
  Bob Merchant

Hmmm. Posting late at night is not recommended! I managed to list the dates for a couple of the Watsons Bay pics as 1969! These should have been 1959.

The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (now Powerhouse Museum) was donated three trams in 1959 - C class 11, O class 805 and R class 1738.

The choice of C 11 was probably based on the fact that it may have been the last complete C car available. It was the former Rushcutters Bay breakdown car 57s and was non-standard in that it had been rebuilt with the upper side panels replaced by narrow tongue & grooved matchboards, possibly after an accident in the 1918--1920 period.

The first 21 conversions of L cars to L/P between 1918 and 1920 used matchboards as did 7 conversions from O to O/P in the same period.

This view shows car 11 in Randwick Workshops on 23 October 1959 during its restoration back to a passenger tram. It has yet to receive its open front aprons, which eventually came from a W class sprinkler car.
