Re: Rozelle Interchange 2.0: Former RTA boss warns more traffic chaos is coming

The 1950s were not a time of good ideas, and the not-good ideas are too numerous to list here.

An earlier actually good idea never built was the inner west rail loop through Balmain to the western line at Stanmore, the line the unused tunnels north from St James were intended for. Another one was the railway from St Leonards to Eastwood.

As for where roads end, all those ridiculous surface “expressway” schemes dreamed up by the Los Angeles fixated fools at the DMR in the 1940s were all supposed to lead to a big parking garage where the Queen Victoria Building is, where of course there wouldn’t be any jams once the trams were abolished in the city.

We can thank Tom Uren for finally killing that lunacy, and Neville Wran for wiping the easements off the map.

Both were from Balmain.

Unfortunately, the pro freeway/tollroad dogs kept returning to their vomit, and we got Westconnex eventually. That shows the fight to protect never ends, because once the destroyers win what they ruined is gone forever.

Actually, the idea for a road tunnel between North Sydney and Balmain has been on the books since the 1950s and has been carried forward on a bipartisan basis (remember, Labor thought that better roads and a car would improve like for the working man). Initially, it was going to end in a surface T intersection at Victoria Road, Rozelle. That would have been a hoot. Personally, I'm not promoting these ideas. Better public transport is always the answer.

So all the traffic that was to continue through, separated, to Manly-Warringah is to be dumped at North Sydney to find their way through Mosman, as at present. Of course it's going to continue existing traffic issues at North Sydney, but at least it will remove that traffic from Glebe Island and Harbour Bridges.

The problem at Rozelle/Balmain is all the richies of those suburbs insisting on driving their cars (including driving the kids to local schools) instead of using the abundance of public transport available in their region. This brings them into direct conflict with external traffic passing though. Unfortunately, the local buses get caught up in this mess too. The upcoming advent of metro stations at Rozelle, North Sydney and Crows Nest should encourage more people to use public transport instead.
