The post WW2 tower wagons had a hydraulic lifting ram but earlier models. Had a hand cranked screw jacking mechanism. We also have an ancient tower originally from a horse drawn wagon awaiting long term restoration. There is a screw Jack type on 99U.

Were the ex-Sydney tower wagons elevated by an engine power take-off screw or hydraulicly? The last MTT tower wagon was donated to the National Motor Museum at Birdwood, SA, where unfortunately due to its height, it could not be successfully conserved.

Sydney Tramway Museum has an original Sydney wagon with short platform that has to be turned by a ground crew

with ropes. We also have one similar to the BTMS one with all the Melbourne modifications. The longer platform can be cranked around by a person on the platform. Guess which one gets used.

A couple more pics - these from Friday 23rd.

MMTB tower wagon No 14 started out on the Sydney system and was sold to
the MMTB when Sydney' sytem was closing. When the MMTB retired it it
came to Ballarat and was used to erect and maintain the overhead there.

I like the 'sun-roof' in the cab!

Ballarat 38 was in traffic yesterday and W2 407 was brought out for a
bit of lubrication in preparation for a bus day on October 2nd. It
started out as P&MTT number 41 and was one of the second generation of
drop centre trams built in 1914. It came to Ballarat in 1951. I have
also attached a pic of the car in it's final days in Melbourne, still
carrying the white stripe applied during WW2. The pic is by Peter
Duckett and is from the collection of the Melbourne Tram Museum.

Mal Rowe in a city where nothing important is happening today.
