Fw: A Winter's Day in the GTCOTS

And on the matter of the movement of cars between Southbank and the south end of the 58 route, does that not have something to do with the installation of gauntletted points at the entrance to the Peel St shunt? And how come? The situation seems far removed from that obtaining at St K Jn.

Cheers, JWW.

Which triggered a "remembering" from Monday. - just an observation: it seems that power-operated points are the unreliable ones, perhaps manually operated points don't shift under a tram - isn't that the reason given for stopping?

I noted that trams running straight down Elizabeth Street inbound do NOT stop at the facing points if they have a green light (I was too slow to switch my camera into video mode when I realised what was (not) happening). Or perhaps the drivers trust the points-bar lady to have thrown the points properly. I must have a look next time I'm there and see what trams do if there's no person on hand.

Trams departing Beacon Cove stop at the traffic light awaiting the booms in Beach Street to go down. They then advance a little less than a tram's length and stop, count to 5 and start up again over the facing points. AFAIK they are manual points but spring-loaded and always set to point to inbound. I've never seen a driver stand up and check the points here (I see them do it occasionally outbound on the 109 at Collins/Spencer Street intersection).

I'm sure someone will enlighten me.

Yuri.
