This triggered a memory, and I found a report on this tour with L 101 in the October 1972 issue of Trolley Wire.

It’s on pages 17-18 :

The other items referred to in the report are the W3 and W4 withdrawals, along with PCC 980, which was at the time to be either converted to resemble a W7, or scrapped if not viable to do that.

Also mentioned was the MMTB tendering for 100 new trams, and Preston building 1041using 980’s electrical and running gear.

Curiously the date of the tour with 101 isn’t recorded.
