Tony,
I don’t mean to be picky but let us wait until the novelty value wears off in a month or two. It may even drop back to much the same as the train. We shall see.

Figures have been released that show that the Newcastle line carried 120,000 people in March, that's an average of 4,000 a day. TfNSW, in its characteristic habit of under-estimating trams, projected 2,500 trips a day. In March the entire Newcastle bus network carried about 450,000. So the tram, one "quiet" little line at the eastern extremity of the city, carried more than a quarter of the passengers of the entire Newcastle bus network. Also, for those still nursing a grudge about the cutback of the Newcastle rail line, the latter never carried anything like that number between Wickham and Newcastle station in recent years.
