Re: 1999: Carr Government Drops the Eastern Suburbs Light Rail Plan

I was reading in some UNSW history the other day, that the university grew
from a quite small student population in 1961, when the tram system that
served it closed (by a Labor government), to the largest university in
Australia within 15 years (1975 was also the year iirc when a new Labor
government cancelled the Eastern Suburbs Railway that was intended to
replace the trams to serve the university). When I started there in 1966
the enrolments had already become massive. Of course, the buses that
replaced the trams were completely inadequate, so everybody drove and
within a few years it was impossible to find somewhere to park. I wouldn't
place any credence in that Dept of Transport report (by a Labor
government). The department was dominated by bus people.
