I have a friend that works for Sydney Water. Lets just say that due to
the actions of a subcontractor, they once thought Sydney might actually
run out of water.

Water-hammer on pipes that large is a SERIOUS thing.

The pipe crew managed to repair the damage and get the line open before
the secondary distribution tanks ran dry.
