Flinders street staion upstairs tramway
  transitclassics

back in about 1968 when I was a fireman on the old VR, my Y class and another had an altercation which required an investigation and both crews and yard Foreman were required to attend an inquiry (for those interested, the Foreman was found at fault). I can't recall if it was the second or third floor but, running down the corridor and disappearing under walls and doors was a narrow gauge tramway, from memory it was only about 18"gauge if that and it had girder or grooved rail! The floor around it looked like malthoid and I could never find out what it was for, the logical thing would have been during it's construction but that is only a guess, I assume that it has long been carpeted or lino-ed over but I would be very interested to hear if anyone else knows of this and what it was used for.
