The story I got was Newcastle can't do 'roll-on roll-off' and CAF will
not allow their trams to be lifted if it can at all be avoided.

The locomotives were probably lifted off the ship and set down onto
rails at the dock and towed away by another locomotive.

Multi-articulated trams can be a difficult lift - but not impossible -
The Gold Coast 7 section 44m long Flexities were lifted off the ship.
