Anti-terror bollards have been installed around Southern Cross Railway
Station overnight. Photo: Larissa Ham .
Police Minister Lisa Neville has just told 3AW's Neil Mitchell anti-terror
barriers are now in eight locations.
Ms Neville said the government had to act quickly and the current concrete
blocks were only temporary.
"This has been in response to international incidents and we just thought
'we can't wait'."
Barriers will be installed in several more locations but Ms Neville said
they were trying to source concrete barriers.

Express reader Carolyn has just emailed in to say the appearance of the
barriers is irrelevant.
"Having been in London, Belgium and Paris during recent events, commenting
on how attractive the bollards are seems very insignificant and out of
touch."
We now have the full list of where safety barriers have been installed
around the city thanks to 3AW's Ross and John:
..Queensbridge Square at Queensbridge Street, Southbank
..Queensbridge Square at the intersection with Southbank Boulevard footpath
..Boathouse Drive under Princes Bridge
..Federation Square at the Swanston Street/Flinders Street intersection
..Flinders Street Station at the Swanston Street/Flinders Street intersection
..Southern Cross Station between Collins Street and Lt Collins Street
..Southern Cross Station at Bourke Street
..Queen Victoria Market surrounds
Apparently 140 bollards have been placed at eight locations around the city,
including near the Queen Victoria Market.
It seems dozens of bollards have been installed at least two locations -
Southbank and Southern Cross station - overnight. Let us know if you spot
any on your travels this morning.
"What about letting some graffiti to turn those ugly bollards into something
better looking?"
A man who works in the bollard industry has just called 3AW's Ross and John
to remind everyone they're called barriers, not bollards.
Apparently bollards are singular? Can anyone else out there confirm this?
One longtime Express reader who is legally blind has just shared his unique
outlook on the bollards.
"It's just one more thing that'll drive me stir crazy when walking through
the city," Graham wrote.
"Though I have yet to encounter them I'm not looking forward to the prospect
of avoiding them as I dodge the vast majority of Melburnians who can't seem
to grasp the simple concept of walking on their left-hand side."
Thanks Graham. A good reminder to be alert of those around you on your way
to work this morning, Express readers.

It looks like anti-terror bollards have also shot up in Southbank at
Queensbridge Street overnight in addition to Southern Cross station.
It goes without saying the bollards are necessary to keep Melbourne safe,
but they aren't getting a lot of love for their looks.
"Well for the safety issue I think they're a great thing, but they're really
not attractive," worker Andrea Elliott told our reporter Larissa Ham this
morning.
"If it's going to stop somebody doing what the other person did (on Swanston
Street), fine."
Our reporter Larissa Ham asked early morning city workers what they thought
of the Southern Cross bollards and got some pretty mixed feedback...
"Don't ask me about it, I think it's absolutely hideous. What next - barbed
wire? It doesn't look good at all," said one city worker named Jean.
"Safety's paramount, but I'm sure there's other ways of controlling safety
around the city.
"The world's most livable city, and now we're having concrete bollards
everywhere. The design's not good, hopefully it's temporary."

And if you were wondering whether the bollard industry is doing a roaring
trade, you'd be right.
Earlier this week, Age reporter Liam Mannix spoke to some experts about the
concrete bollards which would "stop a tank".

The concrete bollards at key sites around the city will be replaced with
permanent bollards in six months but were rolled out urgently amid a growing
terror threat.
The location of bollards are kept secret to avoid tipping-off any would-be
terrorists but so far they have been installed at Federation Square, the
Bourke Street Mall and now, Southern Cross station.

More on those bollards which has been installed at Southern Cross station
overnight.
Larissa Ham reports more than 50 large bollards have been placed around key
entry points at the station.
More utilitarian-looking concrete bollards have sprung up at Southern Cross
Railway Station overnight.
The anti-terror measure follows a number of terror attacks where vehicles
have been used as weapons and are already in place in Federation Square and
Bourke Street.
The new Southern Cross bollards surround the concourse at Spencer and
Collins streets.
What do you think?

Elderly woman trapped in bus door after falling while getting off in Coburg.
Moreland Leader June 23, 2017.
VENTURA Bus Lines is reviewing why one of its drivers did not come to the
aid of an 83-year-old woman after she fell from the 527 bus.
Elena Capozza went to disembark the bus on Elizabeth St, Coburg, when the
back door closed on her, leaving the top half of her body in the gutter and
the lower half still on the bus.
Passengers attempted to alert the driver and open the door before hitting
the emergency open button while the driver remained in her seat.
The bus company has indicated there may have been an engineering problem
meaning the driver was not aware of the calls for assistance from the
passengers.
Mrs Capozza spoke to the Moreland Leader after the incident, saying she
"felt drunk" after hitting her head and now struggles to handle the stairs
at home.
"Walking up the stairs is all right, but walking down hurts my knees and
back," she said.
"I cannot sleep properly. In all my years I am never sick until this
happened."
Mrs Capozza said the driver didn't ask if she was OK and also didn't take
down her details.
Ventura Bus Lines general manager of operations Duncan Reid said a review of
the June 6 incident was underway, with CCTV footage to be probed.
"We believe the driver wasn't aware of the incident, otherwise she would
have rendered assistance," Mr Reid said.
"We do apologise to the victim and we will conduct an internal review and go
through processes to discover if this was a human error or a matter of
engineering or equipment."
Mrs Capozza's son George the reaction of the driver was disappointing.
"There is no issue with the accident itself. These things happen, that's why
they're called accidents," Mr Capozza said.
"The issue that is not acceptable is what happened after the incident.
"You just wonder how many of these incidents happen and go unreported
because elderly people don't know where to go or who to talk to.
"Mum was knocked about by it and her recollection of the incident comes and
goes. Just imagine an elderly lady falling?"
