Fwd: Nachod Signals
  Tony Tieuli

This was sent to me and several others today. This signal was discussed here some time ago, but here is a good diagram we haven’t seen before..

> I recently ran across a drawing of a Nachod signal, as used on so many trolley lines of the classic era, which is fairly remarkable for showing the inner workings clearly. The red and white flags that showed in the clear window are obvious, for example. This seems to be a very early drawing, though, as I notice that several features are missing: the lower oil tank is tapered on ever photo I have seen in service, and the upper casting is missing the prominent mounting horns that attached the signal to a bracket, but otherwise this seems quite complete. Based on the Edison lamp base (then as now very close to 1"), I make the upper casting to be 13" wide at the bulb level, the oil tank (lower half) to be 15.5" wide at the solenoid level and the height from base to top of the arch to be 26"... Can anyone confirm these dimensions? That seems rather small, but does allow for the white and red lenses to be just under 5" and the upper window to be 6". The only thing I can think is that the bulbs are actually a smaller format than standard. The one modern picture I could find shows a poorly restored example where the dimensions seem to be slightly larger, base on the code numbers of the wire used to light it.
