Paddington Depot

Later this month, it will be 50 years since the disastrous fire that destroyed the Paddington tram depot in Brisbane on 28 September 1962.

The cause of the fire has never been established but it has become part of tramway enthusiast folklore that the fire was started by "goons" hired by corrupt politicians with vested interests in the replacement of Brisbane's trams by buses. Has this theory ever been confirmed - or refuted?

The Brisbane tram system closed on 13 April 1969.

An interesting illustrated article on Paddington Depot appears at:

What plans are there to commemorate this disaster that certainly sounded the death knell for Brisbane's modern and progressive tram system?
