the colour patterns. I recall for a time Sydney buses using coloured
destination rolls. Red for George Street routes (the old red lines), Green
for the City Road services (the old green lines) and blue for Victoria Road
service (someone in the STA probably thought it was a good idea)

I believe that the late David Keenan was behind this novelty. Unfortunately
a lot of drivers didn't understand the significance, and where the same
destination appeared in different colour sections some drivers would
mistakenly (or perhaps deliberately ?) use the incorrect colour. I often
wondered if the "average" passenger ever worked it out.

I was living at Campsie when the NSW railways stopped using marker
light patterns to indicate a trains destination.

I could tell at Central if my train was approaching by the marker
lights. Then the Tangara's arrived with their unreadable destos and only
two marker lights.
Because the Tangara's not could show the marker light codes, the
practice was stopped.

The lights only told you which line the train was running on, not its actual
destination.
