What a contrast to the original opening. Looking at the photo, in the crowd I can only spot 14 people wearing hats - and seven of
these are soldiers, firemen, policemen, whatever, wearing them as part of their uniform. In an original photo, there would hardly
have been anyone not wearing a hat. Sic tempus fugit, or something!

honours outside Noahs (now Rydges) hotel.
From my files is an extract from a media release signed by Martin Mongan
(Operations Manager) and Shelly Peebles (Marketing Manager) after the
event :
"As you are aware, this Waitangi Weekend saw the return of the Trams to
the streets of Christchurch, amidst several thousand well-wishers.
Public support was overwhelming and the trams have become firmly
entrenched as part of Christchurch's beauty and appeal. On behalf of the
team at Christchurch Tramway Ltd, we would like to thank you for your
tremendous support and enthusiasm, regarding this new venture. We are as
excited to be a part of New Zealand history as I am sure you are in
covering this story..."
