RE: Inner Circle was Tramway Railway Crossings

Look at the mural from ground level, if you do a complete turn from this spot there is a set of stairs.
Go up these stairs and you will find a viewing deck complete with info on the mural.

Noel,

The Transport mural that once hung in Spencer Street Station now hangs on the back wall of DFO outlet mall adjacent to Southern Cross station. Just walk towards the back and you will see it hung above the  shops at the end. It is difficult to see properly or photograph it, and parts of the mural are obscured, but at least it is there.

Cheers

Thanks Stuart,

Good use for an old substation. Some of the original VR Substations were huge (by Sydney standards). Which ones are still standing ? Those I have seen were at Albion (seen from a Sydney – Melbourne XPT) and East Camberwell (used as a studio to produce the VR mural which was at the 1962 Spencer Street Station). Is that mural displayed again?

Re  high voltage AC line easements, I understand that there is such a transmission line from Alamein across to East Malvern along the old outer circle railway right of way.

Early Sydney railway substations with other uses were –
Belmore – Used by Westinghouse as their office during the Sydney and Strathfield area resignalling projects. Later as a signal training school..
St Leonards Now used for residential apartments. A lot of the original Sydney substations are still in use with rectifiers replacing the twin 750 volt rotary converters.

St Leonards  substation had an adjacent siding where L707 battery truck aka 42ss tramway ballast motor (now at the STM as 42s) would be stabled during the day to charge the batteries between its night time overhead wire inspections on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. I have travelled on L707 across the SHB at night and it was quite an exhilarating trip especially down the 1 / 30 grade to Wynyard station with only a handbrake to control the speed.  I think Bob Merchant will agree with this.

Noel,

Does Fitzroy substation still supply trains on the Epping and Hurstbridge
lines by trackside feeder cables ?

The Fitzroy substation building is still extant but has it been converted to a Nursing Home. I often ride past on my way to work in the City. I quite like the idea of living my last days in room that once housed a rotary converter! A railway high voltage line still uses the inner circle easement which is now a linear park and bicycle trail.

Did tramway crossings at Lygon Street and Nicholson Street also have rail
/tram OHW switching ? Presumably in the final days, the signal boxes would
have been mostly switched out with gates open for trams and road vehicles.

Was there a level crossing at Sydney Road in the early days or was this
always an overbridge ?

The line comes up from the junction near Royal Park and is in a cutting here, so I suspect the overbridge in Royal Parade dates from the opening of the line.

Cheers

Stuart
