Trams Passing Retail Stores
  Noel Reed

My contribution of Trams Passing Retail Stores is the attached picture taken
in the 50s of George Street Sydney near Barrack Street.

Just 50 years after the founding of the colony, Mr David Jones, a Welsh-born
immigrant, opened large and commodious premises on the corner of George and
Barrack Streets on 24 May 1838.

It shows R1 2007 bound for Balmain passing the original David Jones store in
George Street with a newer section (in dark brick) adjoining.

Next is The World newsreel theatrette, one of five in Sydney which showed a
mix of newsreels, cartoons and other topical films continuously through the
day.

Further along is the store of Beard Watson, a former Sydney furniture
retailer.

The site of the original David Jones store has been redeveloped and the
building now standing in its place was the location several years ago of the
long running inquiry into the railway accident which occurred near Waterfall
on January 31 2003.

David Jones have two other Sydney stores situated diagonally opposite on the
corner of Castlereagh and Market Streets. Trams once also passed both of
these stores.
