THE popular City Circle tram service could become a
one-way route.
Under a modernisation plan, Yarra Trams wants to run
the City Circle service only clockwise.
It is believed that under the plan, the company would
raise the frequency of trams and build special stops
with detailed information for tourists.
But the tram union and the State Government want to
keep the service running both ways.
Yarra Trams spokeswoman Kate De Clercq confirmed the
change was being considered, but said that there was
no formal proposal.
Ms De Clercq said the City Circle was primarily a
tourist service and visitors would not mind if it were
to run one-way.
The Kennett Government introduced the route in 1994
under a $6.3 million plan that put tracks on Spring St
between Flinders and Bourke streets.
Rail, Tram and Bus Union state assistant secretary Lou
Di Gregorio said the service should run both ways.
"The City Circle tram was never supposed to be just
for tourists," Mr Di Gregorio said.
Matt Phelan, a spokesman for Transport Minister Peter
Batchelor, said Yarra Trams had not submitted any
proposal.
