In my opinion, trams are called cars (although seldom in Melbourne) for
the same reason trolleys are called cars and trolley buses are called
buses. The real names are tramcars, trolley cars, or trolley buses. It
is strictly a matter of local custom. Many US cities (including your
old one wouldn't be caught dead calling anything a trolley car though,
as the word streetcar is the real correct phrase. And many cities call
