The picture of VR 51 was taken after it had been
transferred from the Sandingham line (4' 8.5") and
gauge converted for use on the broad gauge (5' 3")
StKilda - Brighton Beach line. However, I believe
that the cars were not used in service after
transfer and sat out the back of the depot for most
of the time until closure of the line.

The 'Railway Trams' were interesting in that the two
isolated lines used different gauges. The StKilda
line was constructed as broad gauge, I believe, with
the idea of extending the service via the Flinders
St - StKilda rail line. This never eventuated and
the line was destined never to be connected into the
nearby MMTB lines that it intersected near its St
Kilda terminus.

Why the Sandringham line was standard gauge I am not
sure- any suggestions from anyone?

VR 51 was used once after it was transferred to
Elwood by the AETA for a tour - I've forgotten the
year. The Sandringham to Black Rock (and Beaumaris
from 1926 to 1931) was built in standard gauge to link
up with a proposed MMTB line from East Brighton
(terminus of route 64) to Cheltenham.
