Another memory from my time at Camberwell; one
Saturday I was doing a spare or standby shift and was
thrilled to be given the opportunity to drive a
special charter using VR 52. It has been brought to
Camberwell for a charter by the New South Wales
Division of the ARHS. The conducted said he hated
tramway enthusiasts and locked himself in the back
cabin for the entire trip. I was supposed to pick up
an inspector (from South Melbourne) on St Kilda Road
but he failed to turn up. So we pressed on. One I had
passed the University crossover (yes only a crossover
in those days) I was in "foreign" territory. I'm not
sure where the inspector finally found us but I drove
over the Holden Street line. So that puts the tour in
1975. I think it might have been the Queen's Birthday
weekend. The DI (District Inspector) had located the
inspector and they both gave chase. Somewhere they
found us (in Preston if I recall) and I can remember
the errant inspector saying to me "Laddie; you've done
a good job driving in unknown territory! You'll be OK
now that you are under my supervision". He was a bit
of a character. Perhaps Peter Bruce might remember
him.
Tram tours in "normal" cars are now another memory...

PS: I understand VR 41 from Haddon is about to be
restored at Bendigo. It may already be there.
I'll save my memory of a tram tour in VR single
trucker #6 for another time...
