If you post a message to a mailing list, you are automatically opening
up the topic to any participant to respond, put a conter-point or
whatever, that has always been the intrinsic nature of Internet
mailing lists.

This often detracts from the direction the original sender was heading
and can lead to confusion and misunderstanding.

While it can sometimes be confusing, it can equally open up new
perspective on the discussion in hand or even lead to additional
topics for discussion etc. Again, it is part of the intrinsic nature
of mailing lists.
