Re: Napier

Thank for the Napier pic Graeme.

All I want to see now is one of the Metropolitan car that started
life as a London car on the Alexandra Palace line, ran in Auckland
1907-1922 and then went to Napier! Great mystery as the reamins have
not been photogrphed to my knowledge.

How 40-50 yrs can change the way we see things. If that wreck were to
exist to day we would be down there like a shot to pick it up. In
the "old days" it had to be in pristine condition and almost ready to
put of the trucks before it was worth worrying about (still an
attitude I detect "overseas" - it's a case of being spoilt by an
abundance).

But now the only trace of Napier and its 3'-6" gauage cars is a 21E
truck at MOTAT. With the information that would have been contained
in the Mohaka remains we might have been tempted to build a replica!

For the non-DownUnder residents: Napier is in New Zealand - system
was destroyed in great earthquake of 1931. Phud, pfud = Fiducia (=
last Wellington class of 4' gauge one-man safety cars - see plenty of
previous messages on this group.) Actually Aussies can't pronounce
the word correctly: so you will hear them calling the cars "Feeds" as
in "feed the cat" They hear the Kiwis calling them Fuds by
comparison - strange place DownUnder!

Is this in New Zealand? Also, what is a pfud?
