Last night, I attended the Ballarat Tramway Musem
30th anniversary dinner at the gardens pavillion.
The event was timed to commemorate the 30th
anniversary of the tram closure on 19 September 1971.
It was a very pleasant occasion, especially for me
since I was one of the foundation members back in
1971. Nearly 60 people took part. Most of the members
of the original committees (one in Ballarat and
another in Melbourne that came together to form the
Ballarat Tramway Preservation) had either died or
moved away. However, Richard Gilbert and I were two
people from the very first days. Richard is the
current President and has been actively involved since
day one! He and several others received special awards
recognising the long service they had given to the
musem over most of the past 30 years. There was some
pre-dinner and late evening tram riding in cars 33
(single truck) and 40 (maximum traction bogie). Car 40
was the last tram to operate in service Ballarat in
1971.
