Poles to Pantos

The major difference is that trolley poles run under a straight wire.
If pantos were to run under this then it would wear a slot in the
centre of the pan. The wire has to zig zag along the road. If you
look along a straight road you see what looks like some drunk has
strung the overhead; and, believe it or not, it was all done by
mirrors. A jig was set up on the track and the wire moved either left
or right until it lined up in the correct mirror.
Once the dreaded pole has gone the overhead will be made a lot
simpler as there will be no need for points frogs mainly as the wire
can be strung either as it is at North Fitzroy Depot, or as it is at
Camberwell Junction where the Camberwell Road wire stops almost
before it has reached the Riversdale Road wire.
The other major difference is that poles do a lot of damage fairly
frequently to the overhead. Not to say that on the odd occasion when
a panto decides to misbehave it will do a bigger and better job than
any pole can.
