Subject: Vale Jimmy Dowell
Hi Graeme,
I recieved a phone call today confirming Inspector Jimmy
Dowell one of the founders of the Tramway Museum Society, a great
friend of mine died on the 17 / 11 / 02. Now along with Bob
Prentice The founder of the TMSV - Rest In Peace.
Being a member of the TMSV, I also knew Jim. Jim was based at
South ... oops Hanna Street Depot (sorry Peter) when I worked there
in the early 70s. Jim's work however was not normally with tram
route management, but rather overseeing the 2 man buses that ran to
Garden City and Fisherman's Bend. Jim was one of a small of a small
number of inspectors who worked the "Port Melbourne" roster, which
was somewhat of an anachronism as the Port Melbourne bus depot closed
in the mid 1960s.
Compared to a number of inspectors of that era who were from the old
school, Jim was always cheery and affable, and had a good repertoire
of interesting stories from the good old days.
Regretfully, many of the characters from that era have now passed
on.
