They operate in multiple unit. Each H class tram has a master
controller underneath the floor which controls power to the motors.

The master controller is commanded by electrical signal from a hand
controller. The hand controller at the driving position at the front
(for the desired direction of travel) of the coupled set commands the
master controllers in both trams. The electrical signals are
connected by the H Class cars by multiple contacts on Tomlinson
couplers on the cars.

How does their braking work? I kept listening for an air compressor
or a hiss of released air, but there was none.

The cars are air braked, with the air line connections between the
cars also run through the Tomlinson coupler.
