This may be of interest.
The rail siding which formely left North Yard, crossed Melbourne Road
and the North Route Tramway en route to the grain area was worked as
follows.
Stop boards facing the railway on either side of the crossing were
lettered "All trains STOP, then proceed cautiously over crossing."
Stop indicators and fixed red stop signals at night were provided
for trams.
The tram motorman had to stop and satisfy himself no trains were
approching before proceeding. If a train and tram were there at the
same time ,the train had precedence.
The Tramway was resposible for the upkeep of all 'protection'
signage/indicators.
Today, the rail siding right of way is clearly evident running along
the rear of the current Shell Service Station. Faint 'RAIL X'
markings are still visible on the road surface. The siding closed in
the early '80's.

*As part of the recent Ryrie St reconstruction, all rail between
Swanston & Fenwick St has been removed and sent to Bylands. The span
wire at Swanston/Ryrie St Cnr and the (very rusty) span wire pole
outside the former Geelong GPO were also removed about a month ago.
