Bill's reply illustrates part of our problem in getting to grips
with early information about No.100 (for example) ... We are getting
into the hand-me-down era where only secondary sources are being
referred to or cited. As a "for instance", it would be most useful to
know what primary source was used in making the statement that No.100
was sold to Wanganui in 1908. This is contentious as there is no
record of it there before 1910. Perhaps the difference is trivial but
it makes the point.
The question might be put another way... What primary sources
(company, government, personal first-hand recollections, photographs)
relevant to the Rockdale line still exist, or might be found if such-
and-such archives were to be researched?
I don't hold out much hope (I have only to cite the incomplete state
of the Wanganui Council's records of the time!) but if you don't ask
you don't get!
Thanks anyway to Bill (so far)

That's Rockdale, not Rochdale. We have heard rumors that photos of No.100 at the car sheds on
the Rochdale tram line exist, but they have not surfaced to our
knowledge.
According to "In and Around Sydney With the Steam Tram" Book 4
(STRPS), No 100 was shipped to Rockdale but never operated on the
line.
According to "The Rockdale and Enfield Lines"....

No 100 had been purchased by Saywell in 1905 as a backup in case the

Note that the Power House was near the far end of the line at
Brighton-Le-Sands. This was not the location of the later NSW Govt
Tramways car sheds which were much further up the line towards
Rockdale.
In the 1905 to 1908 period the lien did not have any car sheds per
The electric power cars were stabled at or near the power house and
the trailer cars were stabled in the then covered over waiting shed
area at Rockdale station.
