they use to traverse the city eg: Rt 48 would be City via Flinders St,
24 would be City via Latrobe St, 42 would be City via Collins St.

Citadis 3018 at North Balwyn terminus today was displaying "WEST
END FLINDERS St" as its destination. No route number shown at all. Is
this a common occurrence?
Probably because the route number doesn't fit. There is 24 West End
LaTrobe St and 31 West End Collins St (iirc) in the same line of
destinations.
