Curtains for special trams in Melbourne

An item in this morning's Sunday Herald-Sun (page 31) says it is no
longer possible to hire a tram because of the public liability crisis.

The article pictures the M>Tram Z 199 in Collins Street. It was the
last special tram to be chartered from M>Tram.

Interestingly the tram is pictured on Yarra Trams track!

The article quotes M>Tram spokesman Daniel Moloney confirming that it
is no longer possible to hire a tram because of insurance
complications.

This probably means the end of enthusiast tours too?

In my time on the trams, 1974-1976, there were special charters for
schools and sporting events. One memorable task I was given was to
take a party of school children from Camberwell to Northcote. Can't
remember the details but it gave me an opportunity to drive a non-
Bourke Street car on route 88. It was just before the Zs started in
Bourke Street and all services on the 88 and 96 were provided by W6s
and W7s. (I think PCC 980 that was also used on Bourke Street) had
been withdrawn by that time.
