Re: Digest Number 435

I have not seen anyn postings re the trips last Sunday
by Milano l692 for Lygon St festival between Elgin St.
crossover and the crossover in Lygon St. at Brunswick
Road. It ran several trips between about l2.30 and 4
pm with Z3 214 for company.
It was very pleasant rumbling up and down and talking
to HC and DB from SPER. It did the last trip about 4pm
then ran to Preston Workshops. A few luminaries seen
getting the coverage but not a lot. A nice sunny
afternoon and some more luminaries spent the time just
riding up and down.
Brought back happy memories of Milano in l974 when the
orange livery was replacing the standard Italian
public transport green and most Peter Witts had
trolley poles and pantographs were only beginning to
be introduced.
Also re Bill Johnson's graffiti nuts. Some weeks back
I was on a Hitachi set where the front motor had been
painted. Saw one at Murrumbeena getting the coverage,
3 or 4 at Caulfield jostling for phots, 5 or 6 at
South yarra and at Richmond it was like a fan trip
photo line with about 12 pushing and shoving each
other to get the coverage all of the leading motor of
a Hitachi no. now unknown. It was all very intense so
obviously there is a well developed "scene" out there.
For what it is worth.
John Fitzsimons.

There have been no messages in this group all day
long (Pacific
Time). I'm wondering whether it is well and truly
down, or has
simply lost track of its archive.

Yahell has taken its "this site temporarily
unavailable" notice down so I
guess
they've repaired the problem. Nevertheless a test
message I posted yesterday
has not yet showed. It may have fallen in the bit
bucket or just been delayed,
who knows. Yours was the first message I've seen
since yesterday. I may send
another test.

Subject: Tram News 25.10

* By today, both Z3.154 and Z3.155 had entered
service from GH. Z3.154 had some minor battery
problems, however the tram remained in service and
would be looked at by mechanics after it ran in to
the depot in the evening.

* As mentioned elsewhere, B2.2096 derailed at
Melbourne University. The driver allegedly was not
clear of the spring loaded points, and derailed.
The tram also suffered a damaged pantograph and
reportedly did damage to the overhead, which was
switched off at one stage. A number of trams (at
least 12) banged back to LaTrobe St to crossover.
Initially trams were prohibited from using 1 shunt.
2 & 3 shunt can accommodate a Z and a B, assuming
the wheels of the tram in 3 shunt are at the very
end of the track.

* At about 14.00, an all trams broadcast was heard
from M>Tram FOC advising a passenger on board Z2.106
to remove his feet from the validator or police
would meet the tram to have him arrested.

* Although officially decomissioned, Z1.11 was in
service today, probably because of ongoing
rollingstock shortages at GH.

* By today, 2 W's were on 4 road in GH for brake
modifications; it is unclear whether all the work
would be done there or if this was just preliminary
work.

Ballarat, 1962: SEC dual-bogie 36 on Lydiard Street
northbound at Howitt Street
crossing loop (I think!!. And, despite the sign,
heading away from Sebastopol -
at least that's the way I remember it. On the other
hand, the shadow looks as
if the sun might be slightly to our right. The
picture was taken late in the
morning, probably in February. Corrections
welcomed.)

This car was ex-MMTB 132, built in 1917 by Duncan &
Fraser for the Hawthorn
Tramways Trust, and has been preserved.

Nothing against the loverly liveries on display at
Bendigo. But it's hard to
imagine anything handsomer than the dark green and
cream of these cars
immaculately maintained in in their last years of
regular service. Even the
high-visibility striping can't destroy their
appearance.
