A question I have been trying to get an answer to myself, could it be that they have at long last recognised the needs of the Gunzel? Putting a stop right over the rail yards?? Will wonder never cease? Pardon my cynacism (if that's the way you spell it) but I also believe it's a nutty place to have a stop, did someone miss read the plans perhaps??
Hi Citadis,
I'll pardon your cynicism if you'll pardon mine...
My cynical side says that Yarra are probably required in their contract to have tram stops no further apart than x meters, hence the tram stop in the middle of the bridge...
The only other explanation is that they are planning ahead for the Spencer St station redevelopment with the possibility of an entrance off the bridge, much like Wilco suggested. I doubt it though, the bridge is probably too high and in the middle of nowhere for an entrance there to be financially viable.
As to the suggestion of catering to enthusiasts (or even those slightly interested), if they were serious they could consider setting up web cams linked from their site to show one or many of their depots bustling with trams going in and out. Or even better, webcams that point out the windscreen of some of the trams so people who have lots of time and bandwidth can play being a tram driver. I suspect people who aren't enthusiasts would probably consider both ideas novel enough to visit the YT website frequently just to have a look. If nothing else, it would be good PR, kids would love it, worth a small article in the IT part of some of the newspapers and raise the profile of YT as being innovative. All reasons why it probably will never happen...;)
