I didn't think of that, but it does confirm my suspicions about the shadows.

Understand, I never examined these pictures carefully until recently when I was
first able to scan them. What I wrote in the caption was what I remembered from
four decades ago. And what I can remember is riding the tram out Lydiard
Street, walking over to the Black Hill overlook, then walking down the hill to
Victoria Street (hence the picture in Ballarat 6). I am sure this one of No.36
was taken fairly well out Lydiard Street, and the double track (passing loop)
tells us Howitt St. Given a 20-minute frequency on the line, trams must have
crossed here even though it is theoretically possible for a single car to run
the entire length of Lydiard Street and back in twenty minutes. I suppose
probably I got off a northbound car and had time to walk across the street and
photograph the southbound one.

I'll bet somebody here can recognise the surroundings. Or maybe I'll submit
these pictures to Andrew Cox at the Ballarat Museum website where they stand a
chance of drawing some expert criticism.
