Photos of the derailment and rerailment of B2.2096 are online.

After looking at my photos, what is the maximum bending a B class tram can
take?

Chris.

Some time before 2pm this afternoon (Friday 25th October), B2.2096
(attempting to run a route 8 service) derailed while leaving No.2 shunt at
Melbourne University.

The front bogie ended up half way down no.1 shunt, the center bogie
somewhere between the tracks, close to the running (southbound) line, and
the rear bogie on the points from No.2 shunt.

During the process of derailing the pantograph flipped and broke.

Z3.190 was in no.3 shunt at the time, and it looks like the B2 shunted over
the top of it in no.2 shunt failing to clear the spring loaded
points. Hence the front bogie went straight and the center and rear headed
to the left, until the center bogie was pulled from the tracks.

The tram was left in a nice bent position, and it took maintenance crews
90min to rerail the tram and safely attach the broken pantograph to the
roof. Various spring points had to be unsprung and manually operated to
the required position when pushing the tram around.

Z3.187 then towed B2.2096 from Melbourne Uni Shunt (after some pushing
around to get it on the right track) northwards to Brunswick
Depot. Leaving Melbourne university at 15.06.

The view from the footbridge of the whole process was quite interesting,
and there were many on lookers.

Once I get my photos back I will place some online.

Chris Gordon.
