Figured it looked a lot like that, but never dreamt that construction had
started so long ago. The rerouting has to have been performed before 1950 -
i.e. it is shown on the Gregory's maps of that era posted recently to Files.

My Robinson's atlas from about 1959 shows the tramway revision but Chalmers St.
still intact.

Construction of the Eastern Suburbs Railway was commenced circa 1948
and was sustained until circa 1954, though with only low levels of
activity from circa 1950 onward. By 1950 the Chalmers St hole
excavation was well under way. When work ceased, the Chalmers St hole
had been fully excavated and the steelwork for the station structure
had been installed. It remained as an open wound (and joke) in the
city until 1967 when construction work at Chalmers St recommenced.

Pretty much the whole width of Chalmers St was blocked for many years,
with just footpath access to the buildings fronting the street.

There are still two unused platforms in the Chalmers St hole. They
are directly above the Eastern Suburbs Railway platforms and were
intended for a future Airport line. By the time the Airport line was
eventually built, it was deceided to link it into the City Circle
above ground at the Flying Junctions and it now uses the above ground
platforms at Central, so the extra underground platforms remain unused
for trains. They were used to store Government records for many years
but AFAIK are not used for anything at all now.

Cheers,

Bill
