I knew I had a picture in the goodiebox somewhere.
Compare this view taken from the old post office clock tower corner Robe Street and Devon Street with the trolley bus picture posted by Don from the exact same spot.
The viewer is looking East.
In the foreground a Birney car heading for Westown has just come off the double track and is grinding up the grade to the Post Ofice.
The bogie car on the Port (Breakwater) - Fitzroy line is turning into Devon Street from Egmont Street heading for Fitzroy.
I would have to guess the era as being early 30's, based on the livery of the Birney which has no cream panel on the front.
Also the bogie car still has destination boxes on the roof which indicates it had not been converted to one man configuration.
The Birney would have started its trip from Elliot St or Liardet Street which is almost at the top of the picture.
When the trolley buses started in 27th october 1950 the Westown tram line was removed.
However the small section exacly where the Birney is in the picture remained as a small shunt till the end of trams in 1954.
The trams and trolley buses shared this part of Devon Street.
