Three Auckland pictures, two of them mine - 2

Queen Street, Auckland in 1960, looking south from just above Wellesley Street.
Directly in front of us, No.114 is immediately recognisable as a Queen Street
shuttle by its red beltrail as well as by the 20 in the rear window, bound for
Karangahape Road at the top of the hill. No.114 is one of an order 34 from BUT
which, as it turned out, were the latest to serve in Auckland. But it was not
one of the group of 13 built with more standing room especially for Queen
Street .
In the opposite direction, a similarly-adorned companion pulls away from the
Civic Theatre stop. In the middle of the street, a cousin takes the centre wire
preparatory to turning right at Wellesley Street in order to reach the Route 10
city terminus in Victoria Street and return to Onehunga.
In mid-distance the Town Hall divides upper Queen Street from Greys Avenue on
the right. Route 20 trolleys typically provided an 8- or 12-minute basic
frequency between the Railway Station and Karangahape Road, augmented to 4-6
minutes from Queen and Customs Streets. Alternate trips took the left or right
fork at Town Hall, returning by the opposite route.
