Hi Graeme

Sorry that I am straying from the subject of Trams. With all the
posts about Wellington at this time I could not resist this.
The picture of the Wakefield St Trolley Depot you have just posted
made me feel quite nastalgic. I spent about 9 months in the shed
which you can see just behind the MED substation on the corner of
Wakefield St and Chaytor St. My job was allocating buses to the
drivers. This would have been in the early 80's well before
Stagecoach took over. We were always short of buses in the afternoon
peak an even though Wakefield St had the priority in number of buses
available, because Kilbirnie supposedly had the chance of getting
further buses from the workshops. This did not happen often because
the workshops used to close down for the day at 4.00 PM. There were
not many buses coming from that source. I used to work in with the
Inspector at kilbirnie cancelling shifts to provide the best cover of
our services over all. We could never convince the workshop Super
intendent that in fact we just did not have enough buses to cover all
the servise required.
