But I can't forbear replying to WGB's post. These two then-and-now pictures
appeared in the Evening Post on Monday, July 18 1962. They show Te Aro as seen
from Mount Victoria, the first in 1893 with the large black arrow pointing to
the railway station.
The second was taken at the time of publication, with the arrow pointing to
Graeme's trolleybus depot. The quality is @!$#@$% but I fancy I can make out
some trolleybases on the bus tops.
The dotted line on the older picture indicates the 1962 shoreline and the white
circle outlines the rowing clubhouse, the only 1892 building to be seen in both
shots and still a landmark today.
The numbered landmarks on the 1962 picture are:
1. Dixon Street flats
2. Wakefield Street
3. Hotel St. George
4. Town Hall
5. Cable Street
6. Victoria University
7. The Terrace
8. Cable Car
9. "Evening Post"
10. Weir House
11. C.M.L. Building
12. Herd Street Post Office
The tall chimney in the older picture is unidentified, but belongs to the
Wellington Destructor, an incinerator for ships' dunnage. For a description,

Just found this shot again, From the collection of NZR publicity
department. Taken from a nearby hotel to show the yard area. This was
once part of the NZR line and was the location of TE ARO station.
Some of the buildings in the background still had tracks in the floor at this time, especially the vege markets in the next street which led to Cable Street depot. The NZR still owned much of this land until privatisation. The line continued from Lambton Station (Replaced by the presentbuilding) and ran side of road up to Te Aro, and even earlier had gone right round to Oriental Bay.
