Diesel engined buses have been around for a long time, certainly long
enough to be in service before synchromesh (etc) became common. New
Zealand had strict foreign exchange controls within a closely regulated
ecconomy for several decades in the post-WWII period, so any imported
equipment, such as a bus chassis, necessarily had to last much longer
in revenue earning operation than it would have in Australia, let alone
the UK or USA.
On my first visit to Dunedin in the mid-'70s I was amazed at the
experience of riding on vehicles of the age of some of the trolleybuses
and diesel buses still service, even though I "knew" before hand it
what it was going to be like. The reality of riding on vehicles which
had opened the trolley bus system was a little overwhelming.... some of
those rides were incredibly rough! This was just before the Dunedin
trolleybuses closed down.
Cheers,
Bill

Evan said these buses were diesels, which suggests to me a
slightly later era.
