NZ: National Geographic pictures - 2 of 2

Second of two pictures from the National Geographic Magazine.
This one is from an April 1952 article entitled "New Zealand, Pocket Wonder
World" and shows a Christchurch tram whose number can *almost* be read,
proceeding to turn northwest from Colombo Street into Victoria Street on its
run to Papanui. This turn appears to be the only route possible at this stage -
I can't make out any trace of the tracks straight ahead to St. Albans. Might
that be a clue as to the date of the photograph? (Kodachrome by Howell Walker)
Bit of trivia: The text of the article "New Zealand, Gift of the Sea" in which
appeared yesterday's picture of Queen Street, was the work of Maurice Shadbolt.
Such use of famous authors was not unusual: I remember once reading a Holiday
Magazine article about NZ written by Ngaio Marsh.
Reiterating yesterday's lament: Quality of photo reproduction in magazines half
a century ago was a bit short of today's standards. Oh, to be able to see the
originals.
