My understanding of the main factor determining which way maximum
traction trucks point is that it is determined by where you want to
have a lower floor. That's where you put the smaller wheels.
So cars with drop ends have the small wheels at the ends and cars
with drop centres have the small wheels towards the centre.
The NZ cars in the pictures - having both drop ends and drop
centres - give the designer free choice!
Note also that the reason the trucks were called maximum traction
was not because they offered that - a truck with two motored axles
offers better traction.
If you only drive one axle then you offset the truck centre towards
that end and maximise the weight on the driven axle.
