RE: Time for a quiz

Yes - it had me fooled until Bill's message drew attention to the
background. The church building on the left of Graeme's photo plus the site
beside it was used for the Government Printing Office, built in the early
60s and now the National Archives. It is the large white building on the
left of the Lambton Terminal photo I posted a couple of days ago. On the
extreme left of my photo you will see an extension of the building (the
entrance vestibule) and this is in exactly the same spot as the church on
the left of Graeme's photo. The masonry building on the right was demolished
a few years ago and a block of 'studio apartments' is currently being built
on the site.

I didn't get out to the Wellington Tramway Museum yesterday for 'today'
shots of 235 and 238 - maybe in a week or so. Since the group seems tolerant
of our current Wellington frenzy, here is a postcard I scanned recently, at
150 dpi to preserve details. It shows the corner of Lambton and Willis Sts
in 1912, at ground level, 100 metres south and about 30 years earlier than
the view Don posted a few days ago (wait for a 'today' shot soon!) The
single decker is 41, a double truck combination, and the double decker is 8
or 9. The message on the back of the card is interesting:

Wellington
31/3/12

Dear Pearlie
That was a nice long letter you wrote me & thanks for all the kisses you
sent. On this postcard you see the streets are narrow & the buildings high
there are two tram cars one is like what comes out here but the other is a
double decker passengers can go on top and see a lot but owing to coming
through the tunnel they are too high to come out this way with best love
from your sister
Bertha xxxxxx

Presumably Bertha lived on a tram route east of the Hataitai Tunnel.

Cheers,

Brent Efford

The location of this shot

Hmmmm, ships and the railway station the background... I don't have a
Wellington track map, but it seems to me it might be Mulgrave St???
