Hataitai - Map

For those not completely familiar with Wellington who have been following the
series of posts about the Hataitai Tunnel, here is a map.

It is scanned from the 1953 edition of NZMS 17 Wellington (crown copyright, of
course - keep it mum!) and in blue shows the No.2 tram route coming from the
city through the tunnel to Hataitai and continuing south towards Kilbirnie. It
also shows in yellow the No.15 trolleybus route running south along Hataitai
Road and returning north on Waipapa Road.

It does not show the terminal spur in Waitoa Road across the Hataitai Road /
Moxham Avenue intersection, which figures in Graeme's pictures "WCCT Hataitai
terminus 245 257" and ""WCCT hassles @ Hataitai.

It does show the Mount Victoria vehicular tunnel to the south, though with no
bus lines traversing it. When trolleybuses used it, they exited via Taurima
Street and turned south into Moxham Avenue to follow the former tramline.

The lines of the old Military Grid are spaced 1000 yards apart (not metres.)

In aqua are a few markers (small and blurred, the best I seem to manage with
Irfanview) indicating:

A - the Pirie Street / Austin Street corner (my 1961 picture and Brent's 2002
one)

B - the city portal of the Hataitai Tunnel (mine, Brent's, Graeme's)

C - Hataitai terminus (Graeme's)

D - Te Anau Road (mine)

E - Grafton Road (mine)

F - You'll have to imagine this one - I made the map up before seeing Graeme's
Mt Victoria Tunnel picture.

And let's hear a cheer for Don's finally remembering how to spell "Hataitai"!
